Vote for Minet - rescue the pond
2 February 2010
Vote for
Minet to receive funding to rescue the pond in the Bovril Great Outdoors
Revival. Here's why it's important...
Minet Country Park, established in 2003, is a vital green space on the edge
of Greater London. Owned by the London Borough of Hillingdon, and managed in
partnership with A Rocha UK, its high biodiversity, including records of over
120 species of bird, means that it a valuable conservation area. This is
particularly enhanced by the pond and network of water channels. Minet was also
nationally recognised with a Green Flag Award in
June 2009.
However our pond is drying out! The clay lining needs replacement because
water is seeping out through the bottom, and this is exacerbated by the falling
water tables in London and the East of England. This means that by June each
year the pond is dry, threatening species such as frogs and dragonflies that use
the pond for breeding. Many nationally declining bird species and bats also
rely on this pond for food and water.
Minet is visited throughout the year by a wide cross-section of the local
community including members of the public, school groups and cyclists. As a
focal point of the park, the survival of the pond is imperative to the overall
vision and function of Minet, and we will lose it if something is not done soon.

Thank you.
