As an A Rocha UK volunteer I have helped with its education work, been part
of the planning team of one of its community groups, acted as Community Group
Co-ordinator for the UK and contributed to the magazine. I grew up in Hayes,
used to play on what is now Minet Country Park, and have bird records from there
dating back to my youth! These days, I live near Cambridge. I worked for the
RSPB and BirdLife International for over 16 years and am now a freelance as a
writer and environmental educator. I still contribute to A Rocha's magazine, and
have been a Trustee since 2011.

I am a retired Chartered Accountant, with varied experience including some 16
years with the Oxford Diocesan Board of Finance as their financial controller,
and then as finance director. I have been Interested in wildlife from an early
age and first heard of A Rocha, in its very early days, through the parents of
Peter Harris who attended the same church as I did. I was once treasurer of the
A Rocha Trust (now A Rocha International) and live in Abingdon with my wife,
Elizabeth.

I have been passionate about birds for as long as I can remember. After
reading Environmental Biology at Aberystwyth and Plant Taxonomy at Reading, I
obtained my doctorate in 1987 at the
Edward Grey Institute of Field
Ornithology at Oxford, where I have worked ever since. I recently became
Head of the Institute of Human Sciences
at Oxford, where I teach courses in Ecology, Evolution and Biological
Conservation. Having rejected things religious at an early age, I came to faith
in the 1990s and was baptized in 2000. I joined A Rocha shortly afterwards.

I have a life long interest in the countryside - I was born on a farm and
raised in the country. I am married to Valerie. Our partnership started at the
Christian Union in Loughborough while students some 50 years ago, and we now
have three daughters and eight grandchildren. I am a retired civil engineer
and environmental management consultant, a licenced Lay Reader in the Church of
England. Ten years ago God moved us to Emmanuel Church in Southall where we met
Dave Bookless at a party and he invited me to join him in his campaign to
persuade the London Borough of Hillingdon to create the Minet Country Park. As a
result, I discovered the joy of being part of the A Rocha UK team.

I
first got involved with A Rocha through working with Peter Harris and A Rocha
International when I was International Director at Bible Society. Since then,
I’ve worked on ARI projects related to Climate Stewards and fundraising, before
joining the UK Board. My day job is CEO of the Mowgli Foundation, a mentoring
charity. I am also a trustee of the Genesis Trust, and involved with Global
Connections and the Transformational Business Network. At home in Bath I am
married to Polly, and have two daughters. We are long-standing members of St
Luke’s church, Bath.

I have been interested in wildlife since my childhoold, and remember being
thrilled by seabirds on a Donegal cliff when I was just six years old. I also
found a leatherback turtle on the beach! After reading chemistry at Oxford, I
joined Guinness on the production side and then became involved in purchasing
hops, barley and malt. This led to an appointment as managing director of
Guinness Hop Farms, then the largest hop growers in Western Europe. I left
Guinness in 1985 to join a city-based Lloyds insurance broker, heading up their
underwriting agency at a very difficult time. A members holiday with Peter and
Miranda Harris in 1998 got me hooked on A Rocha. In 1999 I joined Dave Bookless
in the exciting adventure that is A Rocha UK, as the first chairman, handing
over to Richard Hall in 2006. I am currently a churchwarden at St. James,
Gerrards Cross.
