Young Adults

Welcome to the A Rocha Young Adults section!

This area is dedicated to people aged 16–30 (not that we have anything against younger or older folks...!) and we're currently just testing out whether it's something that you'd find useful...

We hope you find some helpful suggestions and ideas for how you can get involved with A Rocha's mission to care for God's creation. There are several ways you can do this and here we suggest a few of our best ideas!

"A Cord of Three Strands is Not Easily Broken"

One thing first though, we cannot emphasise enough how helpful it is to act together. Remember the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 4:12:

‘Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken’.

So, if you're not already in a cell group/life group/small group then why not get together with others and form a group before you take these actions!  Either way, you could become an 'A Rocha Friends in Action' group (become a Friend here) which means we'll try to support you in as many ways as we can - giving you ideas, praying with you, joining forces for campaigns, helping you get started in practical ways...!

Prayer

A Rocha Young Adults' prayer time

This is the most important action you can take!!  Go to God with your burdens, worries, anger, frustrations and be still before Him. He is our strength and without his power in us we risk burning out and running dry...

‘Unless our activism is undergirded by prayer it runs the risk of becoming self-justifying good works’
(Walter Wink).

Try this prayer… ‘God, help me to refuse to ever accept evil; by your Spirit empower me to work for change precisely where and how you call me; and free me from thinking I have to do everything.’

Pray for the whole creation, the work of A Rocha, and seek God’s guidance in any action you take.

Local Practical Action

You've probably heard the saying - 'think global, act local'. We are often good at thinking global, whereas acting local can be challenging.  We'd encourage you to be imaginative, think outside the box, and seek to actively care for all that God has made in your local area - including the plants, insects, animals and even the air!

‘No matter how much one may love the world as a whole, one can live fully in it only by living responsibly in some small part of it’
(Wendell Berry).

Acting for the good of your local area is part of being rooted in the place God has called you to be. Community gardening, rubbish clearance, wildlife conservation projects are all possible practical actions you can take.

Arts Events

Why not organise an event to garner enthusiasm for your local actions? Or to raise awareness about a global issue and then campaign on it?  We've done some fun bike-powered events before which are both prophetic and engaging!

Campaigning

The Cactus Caravan at the 350 campaign, outside Westminster

Have you ever been on a massed demonstration or a march? Joining with thousands of others to make a point, or raise the profile of an issue, is a great way to take action!  Often you learn a lot from going along on the march too!

‘Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves’ (Proverbs 31:8). And that includes the non-human creation!

This could be writing to your MP, taking part in a massed demonstration, or even organising your own campaign! Why not try it... starting small is never a bad thing!
