Churches programme
We don't just do practical, local conservation projects. We are also helping
the Christian church in the UK recapture God’s original commission for mankind
to care for all of creation. The Churches programme aims to resource today's
church and impact the next generation of church leaders.
Working with today's church
- We encourage churches to celebrate Environment Sunday, which coincides with
the United Nations’ World Environment Day. To support churches in this, we
produce Environment resource packs. We have also
worked with Churches Together in Britain & Ireland to produce resources for
Creation Time.
- A Rocha UK's Magazine inspires and resources everyday people with articles
that range from theology to lifestyle.
- We reach the wider Christian community through a church speaking programme
and conferences. We also work with Tearfund, Stewardship and Premier Radio to
help the church recover the creation-care message.
- We have a growing network of regional representatives who are trained in
representing A Rocha and equipped with resources. These volunteers represent A
Rocha at events and respond to requests for church-speakers.
- In 2008, Planetwise was published by IVP. This
was written by A Rocha UK's national director and provides a thorough and
accessible creation-care theology. In 2005 Caring for
Creation was published by the Bible Reading Fellowship. This is a collection
of studies that draw on A Rocha's international work.
Working with Church leaders
- In 2005 we organised Hope for the Planet, a national leadership
conference in central London. The speakers included Dr Elaine Storkey, Prof. Sir
Ghillean Prance, Sir John Houghton and Prof Alister McGrath, and this
theologically focussed day attracted 250 church leaders who learned how God's
plan for salvation embraces all of his creation.
- More recently, November 2008 saw Mission in a Changing Climate, a one day
conference for church leaders organised by A Rocha Friends in Cambridge.
Speakers at this event included the Revd. Dr. David Wilkinson, Dr Simon Stuart,
the Revd. Margot Hodson and Prof. Bob White.
- We also work with bible and theological colleges and have instigated
'Considering Creation', a 4-day package of experiential learning while
journeying through the Welsh countryside and mountains.
