This film introduces ASSETS (Arabuko-Sokoke Schools and Ecotourism Scheme) as
a best practice holistic approach to tackling forest conservation. ASSETS aims
to conserve Kenya’s Arabuko-Sokoke Forest (ASF) and Mida Creek by simultaneously
contributing to meeting the needs of people who depend on it, ensuring they
benefit directly from its conservation. It has been established by A Rocha Kenya
through partnerships with government agencies, conservation NGOs, schools,
community leaders and the local tourism industry.

A Rocha Kenya is also working to save an internationally important wetland
from development. The Tana River Delta is amongst the top three of Kenya's
largest and most important freshwater wetland systems with a significant local
community of cattle herders and fishermen who have been dependent on it for
centuries. However, it is under serious threat. In June 2008, Mumias were
granted a licence to turn the wetland into sugarcane plantations for sugar
production and “eco-friendly” bio-fuels. The Tana River Delta conservation
lobby is therefore taking the issue to the High Court to try to halt the
decision.
