Global partnerships
IUCN

IUCN (the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature) is the world’s largest environmental network comprising
more than 1,000 government and NGO member organisations. IUCN’s mission is to
influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the
integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural
resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. Since A Rocha became a
member of IUCN it has worked in partnership in a number of ways, for example, by
participating in the IUCN World Conservation Congresses; sharing a staff member
in Brussels from 2003 – 2008; and becoming a partner in IUCN’s
Countdown 2010 initiative.
Additionally, Simon Stuart (ARI Trustee) is the Chair of the IUCN Species
Survival Commission.
Conservation International
Conservation
International (CI) is a major international conservation NGO. A partnership
with A Rocha was established in 2006, placing international team member Ben
Campbell in the Washington DC headquarters to spearhead work in engaging faith
communities in biodiversity conservation. Two years later, our collaboration
became centred on an exciting new partnership to undertake Rapid Assessment
Program biodiversity surveys (RAPs) and follow-up conservation with Christian
communities, starting in Papua New Guinea. Additionally, A Rocha ran a workshop
with Conservation International, the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, and
the World Bank in the 2008 World Conservation Congress on ‘Faith in the Future’
about the importance of working with different faiths on conservation
initiatives.
Earthwatch
Earthwatch is an international
organisation which mobilises volunteers from around the world to take part in
scientific field research and education. A Rocha’s partnership with them began
in 2004 when three Earthwatch teams spent ten days apiece participating in
studies on the European Storm Petrel on the south coast of Portugal. This and
subsequent successful field seasons opened the door for agreement on a new
Earthwatch-sponsored project on another flagship bird species, the European
Roller, to be launched in France in 2009. In the meantime, A Rocha Kenya has
hosted Earthwatch volunteer teams, and A Rocha Ghana team members also regularly
participate in their projects.
The European Habitats Forum (EHF)
In 2007, A Rocha International became a member of the
EHF,
a forum for 17 European nature conservation organisations. The EHF member
organisations work together to provide input and advice to the European
Commission on the development and implementation of EU biodiversity policies,
for example, the Birds and Habitats Directives and the Natura 2000 network of
protected areas. The EHF members meet together and with DG Environment two or
three times a year, ensuring a co-ordinated means of communication between the
Commission and European nature conservation NGOs. The group is chaired by
representatives from Birdlife and WWF, and the Secretariat is held by Eurosite.
Eurosite
Eurosite is a network organisation with
the mission to: exchange, enhance and promote expertise in the management of
sites for nature, throughout Europe. It brings together public bodies, private
organisations and non-governmental organisations working on nature conservation
and land management across Europe. A Rocha International is an associate member
of Eurosite as we do not own a large amount of land, but have an interest in
influencing how land is managed to benefit nature. Eurosite holds an annual
conference for its members, and A Rocha was present at its 2007 conference in
Belgium and the 2008 conference in Finland.
