New Marine Project March 2012

Spiny StarfishA new marine project has been established at A Rocha Kenya. Based at the Matamu visitor centre, the project aims to protect this World class marine environment.

To date, the site has been one of the most stable marine environments in the World, enabling many rare species of fish and coral to survive and flourish. The Marine project aims, through research, to understand the ecology and what makes it so unique, in order to protect it from increasing human interaction whilst supporting growing tourism.

Monthly Waterbird Counts 2012

We carry out monthly waterbird counts at the Sabaki River Mouth and at Mida Creek to track numbers of waders and other waterbird species. Anyone who is interested to join us is welcome. The Mida counts are on the neap high tide, Sabaki counts are normally on a morning low tide. Mida is quite relaxed - standing on the bird hide for a couple of hours, whilst Sabaki is more extreme and only for the very keen - 5+ hours in the sun and mud.
