Waikato Past Events - 2007 & 2006

September 2007 - St James Gully Restoration Planting Day, Hamilton.

December 2006 - Maungatautari Ecological Island working day.

Maungatautiri Ecological IslandMaungatautari Ecological Island is a forested volcanic cone, and aims to be New Zealand's largest "mainland island" - an area completely surrounded by predator-proof fencing to enable the re-establishment of native bird species that in other places have been decimated by introduced mammalian pests such as rodents, stoats and weasels.

9 volunteers associated with the A Rocha Aotearoa New Zealand Initiative Group participated in a weed eradication working day on 2 December. We strongly agree with the A Rocha emphases on practical conservation and working in partnership with other organisations, and organised the working day to start contributing something practical to a conservation project while we are still in the “vision-forming” stages… and also to get to know and be inspired by an existing project.

For more information about this working day, see Newsletter 1 in “News”.
