Research in Portugal

A Rocha's vision for the good stewardship of God's world requires an adequate understanding of organisms, their inter-relationships and environments. A Rocha's scientific programmes aim to provide the foundation needed for informed protection and management of examples of the world's most precious natural areas.

At Cruzinha, A Rocha's field study centre in the Algarve, research has focused on the Alvor Estuary, an area of coastal wetlands, scrubland and farmland. Our studies have helped secure the area's status as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, and a European Special Area of Conservation. Ongoing applied ecological investigation is now contributing to the development of a management plan for the area. We continue to monitor local bird populations through regular ringing and wader counts.

Our scientific programme also reaches further afield, to the nearby Serra de Monchique, Barrocal limestone scrublands, and other wetland sites. Participation of scientists and volunteers from further afield is also important to us. A protocol for scientific cooperation has recently been signed with Cardiff University, and we are actively encouraging links with Portuguese universities.
