Our Schools Field Worker and volunteers present clubs at local schools, as well as our three hour wilderness learning programme in the Bisley Valley Nature Reserve, providing a unique opportunity for children to learn about climate change in context, and to discover the wonder of the wilderness first hand.

Environment Clubs

ARZA Environment Club members

A Rocha Clubs are run on a weekly basis in Pietermaritzburg schools. We work with primary school learners and establish a theme for each term. Our club activities are linked into the WESSA Eco-Schools Programme and include:

  • Celebrating environmental days
  • Sustainable living, including recycling and “waste watchers”
  • Tree planting
  • Environmental games
  • Excursions

A Rocha produces lesson plans and support material for each club meeting, and publishes our most effective curriculums on this website, here

Our aim is to expand the number of environment clubs throughout Pietermaritzburg primary schools. For more information regarding the clubs or the establishment of a new club, please contact us  (noluvuyo.mshumpela@arocha.org)

Wilderness Learning Programme

Learning about the wildlife of Bisley Valley Nature Reserve

A Rocha’s Wilderness Learning Programme is a specialist outdoor environmental education service that enriches and extends the requirements of South Africa’s Revised National Curriculum Statement. We present our programme in the Bisley Valley Nature Reserve, one of Pietermaritzburg’s municipal protected areas. The programme is a three hour guided walk tailored to each group’s requirements. Our outdoor curriculum combines two or more of the following elements into each guided walk:

  • water studies
  • climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • mammal, bird and tree identification
  • signs of the wild
  • conservation awareness
